Have you ever heard a song for the first time and felt a shiver run so deep it took the floor with it? That, for me, is the first seconds of Pugnello, and it hardly relents from there. Dara Kiely comes in screaming on ‘The Angelus’, all scalded shriek, hollering about Bananas in Pyjamas and Gary Lineker as crisp maniac. The track pitches somewhere between Lightning Bolt and a ten-thousand-mile thundercloud, Adam Faulkner’s rolls hurtling underneath like Swans at triple speed. The title rewires the Angelus, RTÉ’s evening bell, into a street preacher bawling in tongues. That opener alone would underline everything they’ve been since France 98...
